Storage Options Before an International Move

Understanding storage options for international relocations, including when storage is needed, types available, and cost considerations.

When Storage Is Needed

Storage may be needed when there is a gap between your move-out date and the freight departure, when your destination housing is not yet confirmed, when customs clearance at destination takes longer than expected, or when you want to stage items for shipment over multiple dates.

Origin Storage

Origin storage means your packed belongings are held in a secure warehouse near your pickup location before being loaded onto the freight vessel or aircraft. This is common when packing and freight schedules do not align perfectly.

Destination Storage

Destination storage holds your goods after customs clearance while you finalize your new housing or wait for building access. Some clients use destination storage if they arrive before their shipment or need time to prepare their new home.

Storage Costs

Storage is typically charged per unit of volume per week or month. Rates vary by location and facility type. Your moving company should provide storage rate estimates before booking so there are no surprises.

Climate and Security

For international moves, storage facilities should be climate-appropriate and secured. Ask your moving company about the facility type, security measures, and insurance coverage during storage.
