What Is a GRP Consolidation for International Moving?

GRP consolidation is a cost-effective shipping method that groups multiple international household goods shipments into a shared container.

GRP Consolidation Defined

GRP (groupage) consolidation is a freight method where multiple household goods shipments from different clients are grouped into a single shipping container. Each shipment is packed separately and clearly labeled, then loaded together for the same destination region.

How It Differs from LCL

While both GRP and LCL involve shared container space, GRP consolidation is specifically organized by the moving company among its own clients' shipments. LCL is a general freight term that may involve cargo from unrelated shippers managed by different freight forwarders.

Cost Benefits

GRP consolidation can offer cost savings compared to both FCL and standard LCL because the moving company controls the container loading and optimization. Clients share the container cost proportionally based on the volume each shipment occupies.

Transit Considerations

GRP shipments may have slightly longer timelines because the moving company needs to accumulate enough shipments heading to the same destination to fill a container. Departure dates are typically scheduled rather than on-demand.

When GRP Makes Sense

GRP is often ideal for medium-sized shipments — larger than what would be efficient as a single LCL booking but smaller than what justifies a full container. It works well for shipments in the 100 to 350 cubic foot range heading to popular destination corridors.
