FCL vs LCL for International Household Goods Shipping

Understanding the difference between Full Container Load and Less than Container Load shipping for international household goods moves.

What Is FCL?

FCL (Full Container Load) means your household goods fill an entire shipping container. Standard container sizes are 20-foot and 40-foot. FCL shipments travel directly from the origin warehouse to the destination port without being unloaded or combined with other shipments during transit.

What Is LCL?

LCL (Less than Container Load) means your shipment shares container space with other shipments headed to the same destination region. Your goods are packed into a shared container at a consolidation warehouse and separated at the destination. LCL is typically used for smaller shipments.

Cost Comparison

FCL is charged per container regardless of whether the container is completely full. LCL is charged based on the volume your goods occupy. For large households, FCL is usually more economical per cubic foot. For smaller shipments, LCL avoids paying for unused container space.

Transit Time Differences

FCL shipments generally have shorter and more predictable transit times because the container travels directly. LCL shipments may take longer because they require consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination, adding days or weeks to the process.

Which Should You Choose?

The decision depends on your shipment volume, budget, and timeline. As a general guideline, shipments over 300 to 400 cubic feet often benefit from FCL pricing and faster transit. Smaller shipments under 200 cubic feet may be more cost-effective as LCL. Your moving company should recommend the best option based on your specific route and volume.
